What's The Best Method Of Imprinting For Metal Name Tags?

A lot of our client friends ask us which is better, imprinting name tags or engraving name tags? Our answer is - it depends what type of name tag you’re personalizing.

When we are producing plastic name tags the preferred method of imprinting is engraving. With a plastic name tag we laser engrave the tag and the type faces used provide a nice bold solid character width. The result of laser engraving is that your name has a nice thick character stroke and is easily read. Another advantage of laser engraving the badge is that we have thousands of fonts available to customize your badge. So if you have a special font that you use with your badges chances are we can imprint your badge with it.

When we produce metal name tags we have two options of personalization. We can engrave your badge or imprint your badge. Imprinting your metal name tag is produced by digital printing. This method is involves transferring your image to the name tag using special inks, high heat and pressure. The resulting imprint is very durable and creates a crisp sharp image, therefore making your name easily readable. Some of the advantages of digital imprinting are

  • Visibility – Imprinting is bolder than engraving and therefore easier to read.
  • Font matching – We can match most fonts when we digitally imprint your badge
  • Color matching – We can match the text color to your logo color. When we engrave metal tags can only fill the lettering in black.

Diamond engraving is the second method we use to personalize metal name tags. Diamond drag engraving is accomplished by dragging a fine tip engraving tool across the face of the badge imprinting the name. The result is very elegant fine line text. This is great if you are engraving a metal plate for say a photo frame, however for a name tag the resulting lettering is too fine to be really visible, and remember you want your name to be the most visible thing on the badge!

So our take on the engraving question is – on metal name tags imprint, on plastic name tags laser engrave.
