Metal Name Tags – Printed or Engraved?

Metal name tags are very elegant and project an upscale image for the wearer. Our metal name tags can be engraved or digitally imprinted with your name and logo. Our clients are always asking which method of printing is the best – Engraving or Printing - so let us explain the difference.

Engraved metal tags can be imprinted in different ways. One way is to laser engrave the tag using a high power laser beam. This works very nicely but there are limitations as far as color selection of your name tag. Our metal name tags are composed of aluminum which means the lettering will be silver once it is engraved. This means in order for the lettering to be very readable the surface must be a dark color like black, red, blue or one of our marble colors. This also means that your logo must be a single color (The logo will show silver or gold when engraved). Laser engraving advantages are that you have a greater choice of typefaces for your badges, and the lettering is bolder and more readable than diamond drag engraving.

So what is diamond drag engraving? Diamond drag engraving is where we use a diamond tip cutter to etch your names into the metal name tag. This is the most traditional method of engraving and creates a fine line of engraving into the badge. The lettering is then usually blackened to make the name more readable. This is a very elegant method of imprinting however your names are not as readable as digital or laser engraving.

The way we prefer to imprint your names is digitally. Digital imprinting is simply where we burn the image into the surface of your metal name tag with special inks. This has several advantages:

  • We can imprint your metal name tag with your logo in full color and then imprint your names in a variety of colors.
  • Your names are much more readable because digital imprinting prints a solid character verses a thin line engraved name.
  • You have more typeface choices to blend with your logo than with diamond drag engraving.

Hopefully you found this article helpful in deciding how you want your metal name tags imprinted. If you have questions about our tags just give us a call – We would love to hear from you and we are always ready to help – (888)754-8337
