Choosing the right font for your name tag is a critical element in the design and appearance of your name tag. You basically have 3 forms to choose from, serif, san serif and script.
A san serif is basically a plain font with out extra marks – such as the font we have used here in this article. San serif fonts are very easy to read and have a nice crispness about them. Examples of san serif fonts are Ariel, AvantGarde, Tahoma, Veranda, Helvetica and Georgia to name a few.
Serif typefaces are ones with the extra little marks that give the font character (the one in this paragraph is Tahoma). These are very nice typefaces and work well for name tags. The bold version of these fonts work well for names and the standard version are mainly used for titles. Italics (when the type leans to the side) works nice to accent the title of the name badge as well. A serif typeface will take up a bit more space than a san serif type is spacing is a consideration.
Script typefaces are nice if your main concern for your name tag is beauty and design. The curls and dips of these types give them quite a bit of character but you do sacrifice readability.
When we design name tags here at Name-tags.net we type to take into account a few factors when choosing the design elements
- Is there a company logo? We want to match type faces and style to insure continuity in the name badge design.
- How are the name tags being used? Trade show? Nursing personnel? Corporate office setting? We design the tag with not only the wearer in mind but the people who will be viewing the tags and their needs.
- Are the names long? If you have long names or names with initials after the name such as, RN MD, CLU etc. we may want to use a condensed font on a narrow font to make sure we can fit the names completely on one line.
- Do the name badges have titles? This affects the size of the name and its readability.
- What material are we using as a substrate for the name tag? Some types of material decorate easier than others.
We put a lot of thought into each name tag design to insure that whether you choose an engraved name tag, a metal name tag or a full color digitally imprinted name tag the design will be easy to read and will project a professional image.
